Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Government funding runs dry on Friday:
After a weeklong stopgap funding measure that extended the government funding deadline to this Friday, Washington has only two days to strike a deal on an omnibus, which all signs point to including COVID-19 economic relief. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that she would not leave until a deal is reached on relief, even if that runs into the holidays. Millions of Americans are at risk of facing eviction when the eviction ban lifts at the end of the month -- the stakes could not be higher. After an hours-long meeting yesterday, the four House and Senate leaders noted progress in negotiations after months of stalemate and obstruction on the HEROES Act that passed the House.
The Biden Cabinet is shaping up:
President-elect Joe Biden, whose election victory was affirmed this week when the Electoral College submitted their votes, has selected two cabinet members in high profile positions -- one of which is a former 2020 rival. The Biden-Harris transition team announced that former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the pick for Transportation Secretary, a 2020 candidate who then became a leading surrogate for Biden and Harris on the campaign trail. Also announced yesterday was the selection of former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm as Energy Secretary.
Two former CDC officials are speaking out against the Trump administration:
The former chief of staff and deputy chief of staff at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have spoken out about the political interference that hobbled the agency in its mission to fight COVID-19. Their interviews are featured in a New York Times article that details how the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services engaged in political meddling to make an appearance to the public that the spread of COVID-19 was not as bad as official data and lived experiences would otherwise indicate.
