Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Georgia on our mind:
Partisan control of the U.S. Senate hangs in the balance tonight as voting concludes today in Georgia for two runoff elections. The backdrop of the election is the extraordinary and potentially illegal call that President Trump made to top election officials in Georgia over the weekend seeking to “find” votes that he lost by to overturn the results of the election. In a press conference yesterday, those in-state officials denounced the call and refuted every false claim of irregularities and fraud. The two Republican Senators in the state on the ballot tonight have joined the anti-democratic effort in the Senate to contest the certified Electoral College results tomorrow, which effectively means that they would like to overturn the will of the voters in their own state as they cast their ballots in the runoff. If both Democratic challengers win their runoff elections in Georgia, there will be a 50-50 partisan tie in the Senate, which would give tie-breaking privileges to Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
As cases soar to nearly 21 million, California is under siege:
Confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. are nearing 21 million, as post-holiday infections rage around the country. The epicenter of the virus is currently California, particularly Los Angeles County, where first responders have been directed to not transport patients with little to no chance of survival to emergency rooms due to a shortage of oxygen. There have been nearly 11,000 COVID-related deaths in the county alone.
The FDA has halted a plan to halve Moderna doses:
After some White House officials mused about halving Moderna vaccine doses for young adults to increase supply, the Food and Drug Administration made clear that it opposed the potential plan, in a statement calling it “premature and not rooted solidly in the available science.” The FDA’s response comes as the Trump administration continues to oversee a slow vaccine rollout that has even been mired by a pharmacist and conspiracy theories in Wisconsin who intentionally damaged over 500 doses of the vaccine.
