While Donald Trump and Betsy DeVos try to force our students back into school in the middle of a pandemic, it's clear that our students weren't in safe conditions to begin with.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, 24% of our nation’s school buildings are in fair or poor condition. Students deserve healthy, clean, safe physical environments so they can focus on learning. When millions of American students return to school in-person, it will become more pressing than ever that we make our school meet the demands of 21st century learning. No school should have water systems contaminated with lead. And our schools need improved ventilation systems to curb the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases.

This pandemic has also highlighted the need for sufficient broadband access. How can we expect students to learn remotely if their internet isn't fast enough to host video conferences? And our schools need structures and technology to meet the challenges of the future to best prepare students for a rapidly changing economy.

We should have rebuilt our schools before the pandemic, but it's more important now than ever before!

Today we honor the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

Monday marks the 35th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States. The iconic civil rights leader guided the country through a national reckoning on race during the civil rights era, leading to numerous monumental reforms, including the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. We honor Dr. King and his legacy today, as the U.S. faces challenges not seen since the movement he led in the 1960s: a reckoning on race led by the Black Lives Matter movement and millions of protesters who joined in solidarity over the summer to speak out against racially-motivated police violence and broader racial injustices; the COVID-19 pandemic, which as disproportionately impacted Black Americans and people of color; and an attack on the seat of our government carried out by many avowed white supremacists to demand that the presidential candidate of their choice be installed. Dr. King’s words to live by ring true today: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

Under continued threats of violence in the aftermath of the 1/6/21 attack on the Capitol, the United States will charge forward, as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn in as the next President and Vice President of the United States on Wednesday, January 20th. Over the weekend, dangerous protests largely did not pan out at the 50 state capitols as right-wing organizers had hoped, as arrests continued for those involved in the insurrection at the Capitol. Currently, there are 15,000 National Guard troops stationed in Washington, D.C. ahead of the Inauguration as threats still loom, which is expected to grow to 25,000 by Wednesday.

The vaccine rollout continues to falter:

As the U.S. approaches a staggering and tragic 400,000 COVID-19 related deaths, the haphazard vaccine rollout has had consequences. Total vaccinations administered is pacing far behind the Trump administration’s promise, in part because of the lack of a national strategy as well as outgoing Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar’s mishandling of his communications to states about the number of vaccines in reserve for states to use at their disposal. President-elect Biden is urging the federal government to go big on the vaccine rollout, including with fresh funding.

Our nation’s veterans serve and protect us in the military -- but too often, we fail to serve and protect them when they return home: Only 30% return to civilian life with a job, nearly two million along with four million of their family members lack basic health coverage, 20 veterans die from suicide every day, and over 40,000 are without a home on any given night. They deserve better.

Things just got worse for embattled Republican Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, which means things must be getting better for Kentucky taxpayers.

We learned today that a three-judge panel of the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled that Bevin must release the names of shareholders/investors in the shady Braidy Industries aluminum mill.

As we told you previously, Gov. Bevin invested $15 million of Kentucky taxpayer money in the Braidy Industries mill, which is owned by Bevin pal Craig Bouchard.

If that weren’t shady enough, Russian aluminum company Rusal, largely owned by Russian oligarch and Putin crony Oleg Deripaska (who’s under sanctions by the U.S. government), is putting $200 million into the Braidy Industries mill and taking a 40% ownership stake in the mill.

You may recall that Oleg Deripaska is the same Russian oligarch who paid $10 million a year to former Trump campaign chairman and convicted felon Paul Manafort.

In December last year in response to an aggressive lobbying campaign, the corrupt Trump administration set the wheels in motion for Rusal’s move into Kentucky when it lifted sanctions against the business empire of Deripaska, one of Russia’s most powerful oligarchs. Deripaska and Rusal were under sanctions in retaliation for hostile Russian interference in the 2016 election.

And guess who greased these wheels for Deripaska and Rusal? Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell (R) and Rand Paul (R).

That’s right. The two Kentucky Republicans voted earlier this year to lift U.S. sanctions on Rusal.

By the way, the vote to lift these sanctions was scheduled by McConnell, the same Senate Majority leader who refuses to schedule a vote on a sweeping anti-corruption package, H.R. 1 that passed the House overwhelmingly earlier this year. Guess he doesn’t want an anti-corruption law that might block his own corruption.

The great Russian invasion of America keeps coming. And our own leaders have rolled out the red carpet for continued Russian interference in U.S. elections and nabbing taxpayer dollars for shady deals in the states like Kentucky. McConnell, Paul and Bevin’s embrace of corrupt Trumpism is a virus - and it is spreading. You've been warned.

From day one, Donald Trump defied Presidential norms and refused to fully divest from his businesses, refused to put his holdings in a blind trust, and has continued to refuse to release any of his tax returns. Even when Congress subpoenaed for his tax returns, Trump and his administration refused to comply.
The Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. – only a few blocks from the taxpayer funded White House – is helping to line the Trump family pockets. American officials, businesses executives, foreign leaders and even Trump’s campaign have all hosted events or stayed at this hotel. That means the Trump family is getting richer off of spending by foreign governments (who do so to curry favor with the president), by American taxpayers, and by the President’s own self-dealing with his campaign. In 2018 alone, the hotel netted him $41 million dollars.
Trump and his family travel extensively — something normal for any president, but atypical for family members. In the Trump family case, two family members are White House officials, despite anti-nepotism laws. All the while, Trump and his family spend time at Trump-owned properties (as much as one out of every three days so far), which means American taxpayers are footing the bill for the Secret Service and the hotel costs, all of which go directly to the Trump Organization. The Secret Service alone has spent $500,000 at Trump properties.
Jared Kushner has used his position as a senior White House official to enrich his family business, Kushner Companies. His family has courted investments from Chinese benefactors despite intelligence warnings that China would hold those investments over the administration’s head to influence policy. Kushner’s company sought investments directly from the Qatar government for the family’s skyscraper in Manhattan that was in deep financial trouble. And before he worked in the White House, Kushner’s company faked paperwork about apartment buildings it owned to make a profit, pushing tenants out of buildings to sell the properties at 50% more than it paid for them.
Ivanka Trump has sent hundreds of emails from a private account shared with Jared Kushner about official government business. Her brand has been promoted to the public by government officials, in offense of the Hatch Act. And despite clear conflicts of interests, the Chinese government has awarded her brand trademarks and patents, often curiously timed with favorable U.S. policy from her father.
Don Jr. and Eric Trump campaign for their father frequently, and often harp on themes of corruption. But the two eldest Trump sons have spent the entire Trump presidency using his office to make business connections at home and abroad, while taxpayers pick up the tab for security on their business travels overseas. But in the face of business deals in India, Indonesia and Scotland, Eric Trump has said, “When my father became president, our family stopped doing international business deals.”
A Trump campaign data firm got a nearly $3 million loan from the small business loan relief program. That’s 14 times greater than the average loan, while hundreds of thousands of businesses didn’t get any money at all.
Trump repeatedly suggested that blue states, many of which have been hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic, give his administration “sanctuary-city adjustments” in exchange for much needed federal financial relief. It’s a cynical ploy for a quid pro quo with millions of lives at stake.
Trump’s business received a $500 million loan from a company owned by the Chinese government for a real estate project in Indonesia. Right after that loan was issued, Trump announced he would lift sanctions on a Chinese telecommunications firm -- a move Republicans Democrats alike strongly disagreed with.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives for holding up Congressionally appropriated military aid to an American ally, Ukraine, in exchange for making an announcement on digging up dirt on Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden. He obstructed the Congressional investigation into his actions by silencing anyone in his administration who spoke the truth and refusing to adhere to subpoenas to answer questions about his wrongdoing.
BONUS: The Trump administration used the COVID-19 pandemic to award contracts for much needed equipment like masks and ventilators to friends of the family and Trump’s political allies. A medical mask manufacturer was given a $9.5 million contract from FEMA after one of the company’s top officials went on Steve Bannon’s podcast to make his case. The request to contract with the company came directly from the White House. And Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner deployed private equity and venture capital “volunteers” to coordinate the country’s supply chain for medical equipment. The volunteers were tasked with prioritizing leads for contracts with allies and friends of the Trump family (“VIP’s”), putting cronyism and enriching their pals above the health and safety of the nation.

\nIvanka Trump has sent hundreds of emails from a private account shared with Jared Kushner about official government business. Her brand has been promoted to the public by government officials, in offense of the Hatch Act. And despite clear conflicts of interests, the Chinese government has awarded her brand trademarks and patents, often curiously timed with favorable U.S. policy from her father. \n
\nDon Jr. and Eric Trump campaign for their father frequently, and often harp on themes of corruption. But the two eldest Trump sons have spent the entire Trump presidency using his office to make business connections at home and abroad, while taxpayers pick up the tab for security on their business travels overseas. But in the face of business deals in India, Indonesia and Scotland, Eric Trump has said, “When my father became president, our family stopped doing international business deals.”\n
\nA Trump campaign data firm got a nearly $3 million loan from the small business loan relief program. That’s 14 times greater than the average loan, while hundreds of thousands of businesses didn’t get any money at all. \n
\nTrump repeatedly suggested that blue states, many of which have been hit hardest by the COVID-19 pandemic, give his administration “sanctuary-city adjustments” in exchange for much needed federal financial relief. It’s a cynical ploy for a quid pro quo with millions of lives at stake.\n
\nTrump’s business received a $500 million loan from a company owned by the Chinese government for a real estate project in Indonesia. Right after that loan was issued, Trump announced he would lift sanctions on a Chinese telecommunications firm -- a move Republicans Democrats alike strongly disagreed with. \n
\nTrump was impeached by the House of Representatives for holding up Congressionally appropriated military aid to an American ally, Ukraine, in exchange for making an announcement on digging up dirt on Trump’s political rival, Joe Biden. He obstructed the Congressional investigation into his actions by silencing anyone in his administration who spoke the truth and refusing to adhere to subpoenas to answer questions about his wrongdoing.\n
\nBONUS: The Trump administration used the COVID-19 pandemic to award contracts for much needed equipment like masks and ventilators to friends of the family and Trump’s political allies. A medical mask manufacturer was given a $9.5 million contract from FEMA after one of the company’s top officials went on Steve Bannon’s podcast to make his case. The request to contract with the company came directly from the White House. And Trump’s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner deployed private equity and venture capital “volunteers” to coordinate the country’s supply chain for medical equipment. The volunteers were tasked with prioritizing leads for contracts with allies and friends of the Trump family (“VIP’s”), putting cronyism and enriching their pals above the health and safety of the nation.\n

Smart Capitalism - For the People

Some of the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders are also talking about how capitalism is broken and needs to be fixed. Joe Biden says we need to “remake capitalism”. Beto O’Rourke calls for Conscientious Capitalism, Pete Buttigieg dubs it Democratic Capitalism and Elizabeth Warren refers to it as Accountable Capitalism.

We agree with them. And these are all the same concept, which is pretty simple -- Smart Capitalism invests in 100% of American citizens where Inefficient Capitalism empowers mainly the top 10% of earners leaving 90% of Americans in the lurch and not sharing in the wealth creation.

This gulf has created and it perpetuates income inequality, a shrinking middle class, a corporate environment where CEOs work to enrich themselves and their shareholders at the expense of their workers, and a tax system that favors the ultra wealthy.

The current inefficient capitalist system creates concentrated wealth and concentrated power. It rewards greed and can encourage outright theft (see also the financial crash of 2008 and the role of mortgage brokers...). And it lavishes the rich with tax cuts and allows corporations to - in some cases - pay zero taxes, while keeping in place regressive payroll taxes that burden average Americans. This is not a sustainable system. It is undemocratic, and it is inefficient.

Yet this system of inefficient capitalism is flourishing under Donald Trump and it is dangerously coupled with rampant corruption and an erosion of democracy that could lead the United States in the direction of a kleptocracy. (Wait, is this what Putin had planned all along???)

If Donald Trump has proved anything, it is that we need to move to a system of Smart Capitalism...and fast. He's also proved we need to take serious action to end the outright corruption that now defines Trump's Washington.

End the Corruption in Washington - For the People

When Democrats took control of the House earlier this year, one of the first things they did was to try to end the rampant culture of corruption that has a grip on Washington and keeps the system of inefficient capitalism chugging along.

On March 8, 2019 Democrats unanimously passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act - the most sweeping package of anti-corruption legislation since Watergate.

H.R. 1 would require Super PACs and other so called “dark money” groups to disclose their donors and it would enact new ethics laws and lobbying restrictions. It is aimed at stopping the flow of the unlimited and unrestricted money that dictates both who gets elected and how policy is shaped in Washington. It is this type of unregulated money in politics that rigs the system in favor of the wealthy and is corrosive to our democracy.

What does this have to do with capitalism? Simple - it is corporate lobbyists and corporate dark money spending in elections that buys access to politicians and keeps an inefficient capitalist system in place.

These folks want to keep the current system in place because they can bend the rules to work for themselves. And without anti-corruption measures like H.R. 1, these folks will continue to concentrate wealth and power where they see fit. It is this rigging of the system that blocks the very competition that makes capitalism work and benefit all Americans - not just the top 10%.

Yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) flatly refuses to bring H.R. 1 to a vote in the Senate. It’s no wonder...Mitch McConnell relies on corporate and lobbyist cash.

According to Open Secrets, from 1998-2018 McConnell took an absolutely obscene amount of campaign cash from the financial services industry ($12,994,583), lawyers and lobbyists ($4,543,968) and other business interests ($6,249,322).

If we as a country really want to be For the People, the Senate must bring H.R. 1 to a vote and we must move towards a system of Smart Capitalism that works For the People. All of them.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is no stranger to wielding his power to help him and his allies win elections.

He did it in 2018, when he leveraged his position as Secretary of State to oversee the gubernatorial election he ran in, and turned the other way as counties in Georgia unlawfully rejected absentee ballots of minority voters. In addition, he purged the voter rolls and put voter registration for 53,000 Georgians on hold — 70% of which were for black voters.

And he’s back at it again this year, cancelling an upcoming election for the state Supreme Court, after a Republican Justice is set to retire at the end of the year. Instead of a duly-held election that puts the decision in the hands of voters in the state, Kemp will hand-select Justice Keith Blackwell’s successor, ensuring that the seat remains in Republican control for at least two years.

Anyone might think that this has something to do with the COVID-19 pandemic and voter safety. But Kemp and the Georgia GOP have been planning this since February, using a technicality in the state’s constitution to do away with the election. Rather than play fair, Kemp cheats to win.

When it comes to elections as important as the state’s highest court — or any election for that matter — voters deserve to be heard. It’s time that politicians stop interfering and put elections back where they are intended: with the people.

By the end of December, McConnell's campaign reported, he had received at least $30,000 more from the corporate political action committees of Bluebird Bio ($2,500), Boehringer Ingelheim ($5,000), Greenwich Biosciences ($2,500), Teva USA ($10,000), and UCB ($2,500).

According to filings from his Bluegrass Committee leadership PAC, Merck & Co. also contributed $5,000 to support McConnell and Sanofi donated $2,500.

Wednesday, January 20th marks the beginning of the new administration and the end of the Trump era as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn in. President Trump will spend his last full day granting a slew of pardons, many thought to be political allies and friends. The Senate will begin hearings for several of President-elect Biden’s Cabinet nominees, after delays in the process by Republicans who procedurally tried to overturn the election results and the two Senate runoffs in Georgia that ended up changing the balance of power in the chamber. Tens of thousands of National Guard troops continue to occupy our nation’s capital under threats of far-right violence.

Wednesday will also mark the last day that the Trump Administration is at the helm of combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, a crisis in which 400,000 Americans will have died under his watch due to the virus by the time Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn in. In a speech last week, Biden laid out his plans to respond to the public health and economic crisis, including a new $1.9 trillion relief package that would provide more direct payments to Americans and ramp up vaccination and testing capacity. Today, Biden and Harris will honor those who lost their lives at a ceremony at the Lincoln Memorial.

After the 1/6/21 attack on the Capitol, Trump is leaving with historically negative approval ratings:

A majority of Americans in most opinion polling believe President Trump had a role to play in inciting the violent attack on the Capitol on 1/6/21 and his approval rating as he exits the national stage has taken a nosedive. Gallup found his approval rating to be 34%, the lowest of his entire four-year term. Trump’s approval rating usually hovered somewhere between 35% and 45% throughout his presidency, but recent polling indicates that he might end up with the lowest approval rating of any individual to hold the office in the modern era.

This Tuesday, Georgia held its statewide primary elections. While voters expected to easily cast their votes for the primaries, they experienced a repeat of voting issues from 2018.

Georgia attempted to implement new voting systems to overcome widespread voter suppression in the 2018 governor's election. An election overseen by then-Secretary of State and now Governor Brian Kemp. But instead, a multitude of voting machines were missing or they malfunctioned. This forced voters to wait in poll lines for hours during a pandemic. Many voters simply gave up and left before voting. Who experienced the majority of issues with the voting machines? Predominately Black neighborhoods in Atlanta.

The voting machines weren't the only issue. Many Georgia residents reported waiting months for absentee ballots to arrive, while some never even made it in time.

The failures of Georgia's voting system are no surprise after 2018. But we need to protect the right to vote so we finally make true on our nation's promise of free and fair elections.

We need to enact H.R.1 to protect voting rights.

H.R.1 aims to protect the right to vote by expanding early voting, allowing same-day registration, and requiring states to set up automatic registration.
