Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The House has introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump:
House Democrats introduced an article of impeaching charging President Trump with “inciting violence against the government of the United States” for his role in encouraging white nationalists to storm the Capitol building on 1/6/21. Today, the House will vote on a resolution to call Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and deny President Trump his powers, but Pence has indicated that he and the cabinet are unlikely to do so. House Democrats, after calling for Trump’s resignation and formally calling for Pence to invoke the 25th, will likely vote tomorrow to impeach Trump after exhausting the other two avenues. Meanwhile, an FBI bulletin dated Monday indicated that the Bureau is tracking “armed protests being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the U.S. Capitol from 17 January through 20 January.
One byproduct of COVID-19: a major drop in U.S. emissions:
Greenhouse gas emissions in the United States dropped more than 10% in 2020 from energy and industry sources, amounting to the lowest annual level in at least 30 years. The plummet was due almost entirely to the slowed economy and reduced transportation emissions as Americans stayed at home during much of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emissions tumbled worldwide for the lowest single-year drop since World War II.
A change in vaccine guidelines:
The U.S. vaccine rollout has been disappointingly slow. To date, only 9.27 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in the United States, far below what the Trump administration had planned. In the face of this slowdown, the administration is set to recommend that vaccines are given to everyone over the age of 65 as well as adults with pre-existing conditions that put them at higher risk of developing a serious illness if they were to contract the virus.
