Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
President-elect Biden has released his COVID-19 approach and economic plan:
In a speech Thursday evening in Delaware, President-elect Joe Biden laid out his plan for tackling the COVID-19 pandemic as well as reviving the dampened economy. He released a $1.9 trillion economic relief package, including $1,400 in direct payments to individuals who are eligible to round out the $600 passed at the end of last month, $160 billion for a national vaccination program, aid to state and local governments, $170 billion for schools to reopen and colleges to continue remote learning, an extension on eviction and foreclosure moratoriums with aid for rent and utility payments, 14 weeks of paid sick and family leave, and an increase in the child care tax credit, among other provisions. Biden’s proposal comes after a haphazard vaccine rollout in the U.S. to date and has more potential to make it through Congress as Democrats take control next week.
The death toll due to COVID-19 is nearing a tragic 400,000:
A new ensemble forecast from the CDC has estimated that deaths in the United States from the COVID-19 pandemic would surpass 400,000 before President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are sworn in next Wednesday. It is a shocking and tragic toll that is significantly above even the worst estimates from the Trump Administration.
Major sports stadiums are being set up as vaccination sites:
Sports stadiums in the U.S., from the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles to Yankee Stadium in New York are being set up to be mass vaccination sites in some of the country's largest cities. Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles said that Dodger Stadium will have the capacity to vaccinate 12,000 people per day. Using stadiums is part of the effort by state and local health authorities to ramp up vaccination efforts and find large sites with increasing capacity to do so. To date, over 10 million Americans have been vaccinated.
