Your Daily Roundup for January 20th
Let us know your thoughts on this historic day!
Good morning. We are covering the Inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
It’s Inauguration Day in America:
After four unprecedented years, President Donald Trump has departed the White House for the final time. Unlike his predecessors, he will not be attending the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, who will be sworn into office at noon eastern today. One of Trump’s final moves as president was to cancel his own executive order barring former White House employees from lobbying for five years after they leave. He also issued dozens of pardons, including to his former strategist Stephen Bannon. In his farewell address at Joint Base Andrews, Trump referred to COVID-19 as the “China virus” and declined to take responsibility for the U.S. response.
Biden and Harris spent the morning attending mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Washington. They will then head to the Capitol, which was under siege by a pro-Trump insurrectionist attack only two weeks ago, for the Inauguration Ceremony. Every living former president besides Trump (and former President Jimmy Carter, who is in his nineties) will be in attendance as Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are sworn into office. President-elect Biden will then give his inauguration address, though due to the pandemic, there will be no crowd of supporters. Instead, the National Mall is lined with thousands of American flags.
The first order of business for the new administration will be the undoing of several Trump-era executive actions, including, rejoining the Paris Climate Accord and the World Health Organization; reversing Trump’s so-called Muslim ban; extending the nationwide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures; extending the pause on student loans until the end of September; canceling the Keystone XL pipeline and canceling Trump’s 1776 Commission while directing agencies to review their actions to ensure racial equity.
