Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The U.S. surpassed 25 million cases of COVID-19:
The United States continues to be far and away the world’s leader in confirmed COVID-19 cases, as 25 million known infections were reached over the weekend, only a year after the first case was detected in this country. Health experts have long pointed out, though, that the true case count is likely much higher, as many individuals who are sick do not get tested or are infected but do not present with symptoms.
The COVID-19 crisis is exacerbated by the newer, more contagious strain of the virus that has been spreading in the U.S. since December. Dr. Anthony Fauci said that the U.S. needs to independently study whether the new strain can cause greater negative health impacts, including death. Vaccine makers are rushing to determine if their vaccines are just as protective against the new strain. Just this morning, Moderna announced that its vaccine that has been approved and administered in the U.S. is effective against new variants of the virus, though less so against the new strain first discovered in South Africa. The company said they would work to develop a new form of its vaccine to be used as a booster.
The House is set to send its article of impeachment to the Senate Monday night:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said the House will send its article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump for his role in inciting the violent attack against the Capitol on 1/6/21 to the Senate Monday night. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had previously reached an agreement in the 50-50 divided Senate that the upper chamber would begin its trial on February 9th.
