Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The House will vote today to remove Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from two committees:
Republican members of the House will today have to show whether they stand on the side of QAnon-believing Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who was revealed to have made a series of anti-semitic and Islamaphobic comments in videos, as well as denying school shootings, or on the side of Democrats who are urging her removal from two House committees. The vote comes after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) refused to move her from the committees after given the option by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). The vote comes one day after the Republican caucus, in a secret ballot, overwhelmingly voted in favor of keeping Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) in her leadership position after many on the far right revolted when she voted to impeach former President Donald Trump.
House Democrats passed Biden’s $1.9T relief package:
On Wednesday, Democrats in the House -- without a single Republican vote -- passed the $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package framed by President Biden’s American Rescue Plan. The House passage came after Senate Democrats moved to use budget reconciliation to pass the economic stimulus package, after Republicans indicated they would have significant cuts to the plan, and many states were urging Congress to “go big.”
Unemployment claims remain high:
816,000 Americans filed new claims for state unemployment benefits last week, a modest drop from the week prior, but still well above pre-pandemic levels. Another 350,000 Americans applied for the federal unemployment assistance program.
