Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Democrats are going big on childcare relief::
Senate Democrats are expected to introduce a bill to provide at least $3,000 per child for tens of millions of families in the United States -- including $3,600 per child under the age of 6 and $3,000 per child between ages 6-17. The benefits would largely apply to individuals earning $75,000 per year or less and couples earning $150,000 per year or less together. This is one of several relief programs as part of President Biden’s expansive economic relief package.
Former President Trump’s second impeachment trial begins this week:
Donald J. Trump became the first president in American history to be impeached twice, and he will stand trial in the Senate beginning this week. The former president was impeached on charges of inciting an insurrection when a pro-Trump mob violently attacked the U.S. Capitol during a joint session to count the Electoral Votes of the November 2020 election in which President Joe Biden defeated Trump; an attack resulting in five deaths. House Impeachment Managers called on Trump to testify, but he refused. We will be tracking the latest updates this week.
The Super Bowl brought over 20,000 people together:
Though the NFL pared down its normal Super Bowl festivities in light of the pandemic, it still was held with 22,000 fans in the 66,000 capacity Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. Public health experts warned that the gathering could become a super spreader event, especially as fans, mostly without masks, took to the streets outside the stadium to celebrate the Tampa Bay Buccaneers victory.
