Your Daily Roundup for February 10th
Let us know what you think.
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The impeachment trial of Donald Trump will continue:
After arguments yesterday around the constitutionality of former President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial (most legal experts agree it is constitutional), only 6 Republican Senators joined the 50 Democrats in voting to proceed with the trial. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who single-handedly delayed the trial while Trump was still in office and McConnell was then-Majority Leader, voted no on the measure that argued that because Trump was no longer in office, he was not eligible for the trial. Proceedings will resume today at 12 pm ET, and we will be tracking the latest updates.
The vaccine rollout is increasing at a promising rate:
After a widely panned rollout on the part of the previous administration, the Biden administration has accelerated the pace of vaccine distribution by 28% since they took office. The administration shipped 11 million doses to states, Tribes, and territories in the past week after the weekly total was 8.6 million doses three weeks ago. Moreover, the country is close to hitting the 1.5 million shots administered each day needed to get to 100 million in the first 100 days.
With positive vaccine news comes a big downside -- race and ethnicity data are incomplete:
The administration has an incomplete picture of data that will help meet the goal of an equitable vaccine rollout. There are race and ethnicity data for only 52% of vaccine recipients to date. With still limited vaccines, public health experts and racial equity advocates warn that those with greater access may cut the line to receive a vaccine before eligible counterparts in underserved communities. But next week, the Biden administration will begin distributing vaccine doses directly to clinics in those communities.
