Forbes Reports: Women Must Be Able To Have Abortions At Home During Coronavirus, Says NWHN
Many sexual and reproductive clinics have felt the brunt of COVID-19, as it has forced many clinics to close their doors. But the National Women's Health Network has urged the FDA to make the abortion pill available for people to access at home.
The National Women’s Health Network worked alongside 80 organizations to write an open letter to the U.S Food and Drug Administration urging it to lift unnecessary medical restrictions so people could access the two pills needed to induce an abortion at home.
Currently, the FDA requires that people must pick up the pill, mifepristone, in person from their clinician. This forces many people to leave their homes and travel long distances while putting themselves and others at risk of contracting COVID-19.
The letter reads, “these requirements have long harmed patients’ health by delaying or blocking access to medication abortion with no countervailing medical benefit. Now, in the midst of a public health emergency, these requirements are further endangering patients and straining the health system.”
Women need access to abortion more than ever. This is a public health crisis - not an abortion debate.
