Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The unemployment rate is higher than Trump’s Labor Department wanted you to know:
A “misclassification error” made for a misleading unemployment rate. Friday, the Trump administration said the May unemployment rate was 13.3% after a surprising 2.5 million jobs were added. But because the government mistakenly classified 4.9 million Americans who were temporarily laid off as employed, the actual unemployment rate for May was 16.3%. In April, the reported unemployment rate of 14.7% actually was closer to 19.7%.
Democrats introduced sweeping reforms to address police brutality that has led to massive civil rights protests:
House and Senate Democrats introduced a new reform package to address police reform in America.
The Justice in Policing Act of 2020 would ban choke-holds, make it easier to prosecute police misconduct, and establish a national registry to track police misconduct. It would also limit the use of military-grade weapons by state and local law enforcement and tie federal funding to training and adoption of policies and practices to combat racial profiling.
Joe Biden has widened his lead in a new CNN poll:
A new CNN poll finds former Vice President Joe Biden leading President Trump by 14 points nationally:
- Biden: 55%
- Trump: 41%
The same poll finds that Trump’s job approval has slipped and is now net 17 points negative:
- Approve: 40%
- Disapprove: 57%
