Your Daily Roundup for June 15th
What do you think?
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Trump is determined to hold a rally in Tulsa, despite the ongoing risk of COVID-19:
President Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally this Saturday in a 19,000-seat stadium in Tulsa, Oklahoma, despite the venue canceling all other events through the end of July. Public health experts in the state have warned that the rally could be a conduit to spread COVID-19.
The rally was initially scheduled for this Friday, June 19th, or Juneteenth, a significant holiday that celebrates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved population of African Amrericans. Under pressure, Trump moved the rally to Saturday amidst the social justice movement that is challenging racism and police brutality in the United States.
He now will have to contend with state officials and public health experts who are pleading with him to move the event. Meanwhile, the campaign is bragging that “1 million people” have requested tickets.
COVID-19 is spreading in some places faster than ever:
Florida hit its second-highest single day rise in cases over the weekend. South Carolina set a single day record on Sunday, and North Carolina recorded its worst day of outbreaks on Friday. Arizona is another hotspot, with hospitals on the brink of capacity and businesses forced to close their doors again.
Over 2 million Americans have been infected with the virus, and still over 800 are dying due to COVID-19 each day.
Trump’s aggregate approval is at risk of slipping below 40%
A series of national polls over the last week have put Trump’s average approval at 40.8%, with nearly 55% of Americans disapproving -- according to FiveThirtyEights aggregator.
It was only a few months ago in April that Trump’s approval was nearing 50%. He is now at risk of reaching his lowest approval of his presidency.
