Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
In states where cases are rising, Governors are beginning to take action. But is it too late to bend the curve?
Texas Governor Greg Abott urged residents to stay home as cases reached record levels in the state. But he implemented one of the country’s shortest stay-at-home orders earlier on in the pandemic’s course. In over half of the nation’s states, new cases are on the rise as states reopened weeks ago. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, said the surge in new cases is “disturbing” due to states reopening too quickly and without effective plans to test and contact trace.
Experts agree wide scale testing is necessary to safely reopen. Except the President:
At his bungled Tulsa rally, President Trump shockingly admitted that he wanted to “slow the testing down” so that the number of cases would appear lower. His campaign and members of his administration said that his comments were in jest.
But that walkback was directly contracted by Trump himself: When asked if he was kidding, Trump said, “I don’t kid, let me just tell you, let me make it clear … By having more tests, we have more cases.” It is a stunning admission from the President of the United States that he would rather deflate the appearance of new cases than identify positive cases in order to isolate infected people and slow the spread.
Trump’s approval continues to slide:
The New York Times/Siena is out with a new poll, and it shows Trump’s job approval continues to be significantly under water:
- Approve: 41%
- Disapprove: 56%
Politico/Morning Consult found an even larger deficit in Trump’s approval among voters:
- Approve: 39%
- Disapprove: 58%
The New York Times/Siena poll also asked voters who their choice for President would be in November. By a 14-point margin, Biden leads Trump:
- Biden: 50%
- Trump: 36%
