Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The big story: Trump was briefed on a Russian bounty scheme -- and did nothing:
The New York Times broke the story that Russia offered to pay bounties to Taliban militants to kill U.S. and coalition troops in Afghanistan. And as far as we are aware from the reporting, the Trump administration did nothing.
The AP reported that the administration knew as early as 2019 of the classified intelligence. In response to the news, Trump and his aides downplayed it and claimed he and Vice President Mike Pence were not briefed.
As cases explode across the country, Dr. Fauci and other top health officials are set to testify to Congress today:
From California, where cases topped 200,000, to Arizona, where a new shutdown order was put in place, COVID-19 is spreading rapidly across the U.S.
The nation’s top health officials will testify to Congress for the second time in a week. The officials will be in front of the Senate Health and Education committee to provide an update on how to reopen safely, but there will certainly be questions on why the virus is growing.
Trump’s job approval isn’t budging:
In a new NPR/PBS/Marist poll out Friday -- before the Russia bounty scandal broke -- Trump’s job approval among registered voters was firmly in the low 40’s:
- Approve: 41%
- Disapprove: 57%
This net 16 point negative approval is about in line with his polling average of 15 points under water.
Among those who disapprove, 49% do strongly, compared to just 27% who strongly approve.
