Your Daily Roundup for July 9th
What do you think?
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The U.S. hit a grim milestone yesterday:
On Wednesday, the United States surpassed 3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 -- more than any other country in the world by over 1.3 million.
Wednesday also marked another daily record of new confirmed cases with over 59,000 across the country. Five states -- Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and West Virginia -- joined the U.S. in setting their own single-day records.
1.3 million more Americans are out of work:
In the past week, 1.3 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits. An additional million filed for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. Although June saw an uptick in hiring, it was likely due to temporarily laid-off or furloughed workers being rehired. Now as the virus surges again and states are forced to lock down businesses, more jobs are being lost.
Not once has the weekly state unemployment claims figure fallen below a million.
New polls this week show no movement in Trump’s approval:
Voters are still overall disapproving of President Trump’s job performance.
A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows him 17-points under water:
- Approve: 40%
- Disapprove: 57%
Similarly, an Economist/YouGov poll out yesterday found Trump’s approval 15 points net-negative:
- Approve: 42%
- Disapprove: 57%
