Around the nation, COVID-19 is sharply increasing -- overwhelming hospitals and emergency rooms, as cases have skyrocketed to a staggering 3 million Americans.
The issue of overwhelmed hospitals worsens the growing shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), which has been an issue since the beginning of the pandemic. Healthcare workers are seeing a "dire shortage of respirator masks, isolation gowns and disposable gloves that protect front-line medical workers from infection."
As the wealthiest nation in the world, the United States has no excuse for a shortage of vital protective equipment. No less after four months of combatting this public health crisis.
Here's what is happening now:
- Neurologists, cardiologists and cancer specialists cannot open due to a lack of PPE -- leaving those patients without care.
- Hospitals and emergency rooms are lacking necessary PPE for days and in some cases weeks.
- Texas has a list of children awaiting emergency surgeries, but without PPE, their surgeries can't happen.
COVID-19 is getting worse. The Trump administration must acknowledge it and tackle it head-on. To start, our government needs to build an infrastructure to fulfill and eventually exceed the depleted PPE stockpile. Part of the depletion in the stockpile is because the United States depends on foreign countries to provide healthcare equipment. It is time that we invest in Americans by improving our infrastructure and supply chains to produce our own PPE that can handle the demands of a national pandemic.
