Your Daily Roundup for July 13th
What do you think?
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Florida just set a grim record:
Over 15,300 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Florida on Sunday, a record number of new cases for any U.S. state and more than most countries. Six hospitals have reached capacity in Miami-Dade county alone. Despite the record outbreak in Florida, Disney World reopened its parks over the weekend.
The virus is surging in 39 states across the country, from the south to the west and now the midwest. It is not showing any signs of slowing.
The Trump administration’s response to the surging pandemic? Go after Dr. Fauci:
As the nation grapples with the growing crisis, the Trump administration is setting up Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, as the scapegoat.
Aids to the president anonymously provided news outlets opposition research on Dr. Fauci, included statements he made early on in the pandemic’s course that they alleged were inaccurate. This comes after Trump said on Fox News that Dr. Fauci “is a nice man, but he’s made a lot of mistakes.” Not lost on most Americans are the many mistakes Trump has made.
Texas is shaping up to be a close race:
As the virus balloons in Texas, the race for president in the state is narrowing.
Two polls suggest a close margin in a state that is typically solid in the R column. Texas has not voted for the Democratic nominee since 1976.
A new Dallas Morning News poll shows that Biden is up 5 points over Trump:
- Biden: 48%
- Trump: 43%
But a new CBS News/YouGov poll finds that Trump is up by a point:
- Biden: 45%
- Trump: 46%
It will be a state to watch this year.
