Your Daily Roundup for July 16th
What do you think?
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Why are the Trump’s promoting a brand from their public offices -- in the middle of a pandemic?
In the past two days, both President Trump and his daughter and White House adviser, Ivanka Trump, have openly promoted the brand Goya on social media. Trump even did so from the Resolute Desk:
Their support comes after backlash against Goya’s CEO, who praised Trump during a press conference earlier this week. Their displays are likely a direct violation of ethics laws that bar government officials from using their office to endorse specific products or groups. And in the middle of a surging pandemic, it is highly questionable why the Trumps are spending their time on these stunts.
Two unlikely entities put mask orders in place:
As the virus continues to spread, the state of Alabama and Walmart both issued mandatory mask-wearing orders, for residents and customers, respectively. Their moves to stop the spread of the virus come as the Gov. Brain Kemp (R-GA) vacated local rules in the state for mask-wearing -- on the worst day of the virus in Georgia.
President Trump’s approval is hitting new lows:
A new Quinnipiac poll shows Trump approval near historic lows for his presidency:
- Approve: 36%
- Disapprove: 60%
It’s a 6-point drop since their last poll in the middle of June.
Perhaps even worse for Trump, his long standing net approval of his handling of the economy is under water for the first time since August 2017:
- Approve: 44%
- Disapprove: 53%
