Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The U.S. shattered its single-day COVID-19 record:
A staggering 75,600 cases of COVID-19 were reported Thursday in the U.S. alone, smashing previous daily case records -- for the 11th time this month. We are on track to realize Dr. Fauci’s grim warning that the U.S. could reach 100,000 daily new cases if drastic measures weren’t taken to stop the spread.
And though the Trump administration likes to say that while cases are going up, the death rate is low, the number and rate of deaths are beginning to increase as well in some of the hardest-hit places, like Florida.
Hospitals are becoming overwhelmed with patients:
ICU beds in Miami-Dade County, Florida are at 107% capacity. Hospitalizations in Georgia are up nearly 40% in just the last week. As the virus rages, hospitals are starting to become overwhelmed and over-capacity.
And the backdrop of overcrowded hospitals is a severe delay in testing across the country. Testing is increasing -- which is important -- but commercial labs are swamped. It’s taking over 7 days in some cases to turn around results.
Americans do not trust what Trump has to say on the virus:
A new ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that a vast majority of Americans (64%) do not trust much or anything of what Trumps says about the virus.
The same poll finds that most Americans do not approve of Trump’s handling of the outbreak:
- Approve: 38%
- Disapprove: 60%
That’s down from a 51% approval rating at the beginning of the pandemic in March.
