Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
As the virus surges, states are imposing stricter control measures:
Kentucky is set to announce stricter social distancing measures in their state, while others are being urged to do so by Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of the WHite House coronavirus task force.
Over the weekend, Florida surpassed New York for the largest number of confirmed cases since the start of the pandemic. Dr. Birx’s urging of states to limit social gatherings before the virus “gets worse” comes as the CDC quietly released new guidelines that strongly fell on the side of reopening schools in the fall.
After a misstep last week, Senate Republicans are expected to unveil their COVID-19 relief package today:
Senate Republicans could not reach an agreement last week, and delayed their release of a new COVID-19 relief bill until today. The bill is expected to include unemployment benefits that match 70% of lost wages, tax-credits for those who go back to work, liability protections for businesses, schools, hospitals and more against lawsuits related to the virus, and funding for K-12 education to reopen.
The bill will be far from what Democrats are pushing for, including funding for state and local governments to fight the virus and balance their budgets.
New polling shows an evolving race for the White House:
New polling out this weekend shows the race for president widening in some states, and becoming more competitive in others.
A new NBC News/Marist poll shows Biden leading significantly in North Carolina, a state that previously had a more narrow margin:
- Biden: 51%
- Trump: 44%
While a new poll from CBS News/YouGov shows Trump leading in Ohio, after other polling showed a split race or Biden leading:
- Biden: 45%
- Trump: 46%
But in Michigan, Biden’s lead in the state continues to expand. According to a new CNN poll, the former Vice President is up by 12 points over the incumbent:
- Biden: 52%
- Trump: 40%
