Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Former President Barack Obama made a powerful case for democracy, while current President Donald Trump tries to undermine it:
President Barack Obama eulogized the late civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis. In a powerful speech, Obama encouraged Americans to honor Lewis’s legacy and vote, calling it the most important action for democracy one can take. Obama also called for the end of the filibuster if needed to pass a new Voting Rights Act in Lewis’s honor.
Meanwhile, President Trump floated the idea of delaying the presidential election due to COVID-19 -- a move that if attempted, would be unconstitutional. He also continued to make false statements about vote by mail, while espousing his support for absentee voting -- otherwise known as voting by mail.
Lawmakers in D.C. failed to reach a deal on extending unemployment benefits
The deadline for the additional unemployment benefits has now come, and members of the Senate failed to make an agreement to extend the $600-per-week payment that has been vital to millions of Americans. Republicans are seeking to reduce the payments to $200-per-week, while Democrats are holding firm at $600.
As lawmakers squabble over the economic response to the virus, the nation’s top health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, are testifying today before the House subcommittee investigating the Trump administration's response to the pandemic.
Gallup is out with a new monthly poll:
A new Gallup poll tracking Americans’ opinions this month shows that President Trump’s approval continues to suffer:
- Approve: 41%
- Disapprove: 56%
Congress fares even worse. Their approval is 59 points under water:
- Approve: 18%
- Disapprove: 77%
