Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
20 million people have been confirmed to have contracted COVID-19:
Across the world, more than 20 million people have been infected with COVID-19 -- and the actual count is likely significantly higher. Over 5 million of those cases belong to the United States, which leads every other country by 2 million or more confirmed cases. It took only 16 days for the case count in the U.S. to jump from 4 million to 5 million.
Yesterday alone there were nearly 50,000 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the U.S. -- a drop from the mid-July peak but still much higher than the containment needed to go into the fall cold and flu season without the risk of overwhelming hospital systems.
The administration is considering blocking the reentry of Americans abroad expected to have COVID-19:
Despite the vast community spread of COVID-19 within the country’s borders, the current administration is weighing regulations that would block American citizens and legal permanent residents from reentering the United States if border authorities believe they might have the disease.
Trump’s job approval isn’t budging:
A new poll out this week from Georgetown University/Battleground finds that President Trump’s job approval remains firmly in the low 40’s, where it has been for several weeks:
- Approve: 42%
- Disapprove: 55%
The 13-point net disapproval rating matches his current deficit in the same poll against former Vice President Joe Biden:
- Biden: 53%
- Trump: 40%
President Trump is not being helped by how voters feel about the direction of the country -- nearly three quarters of respondents say it is on the wrong track:
- Right direction: 22%
- Wrong Track: 72%
