Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The Democratic ticket is set:
Former Vice President Joe Biden announced his choice for running mate on the Democratic ticket for president and vice president. Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) is the historic choice, becoming the first Black woman and first South Asian person to be nominated for national office by a major party. Sen. Harris, a former presidential candidate herself, cut her teeth in California as a prosecutor and eventual District Attorney of San Francisco, then later the state’s Attorney General before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016.
Biden and Harris will take on President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in just 83 days, with many states beginning early voting and voting by mail in a matter of weeks.
COVID-19 continues to alter life in America:
Two marquee college football conferences - the Big Ten and the Pac-12 - decided to cancel their fall seasons to protect student-athletes, staff, and families in the face of COVID-19.
Schools that have already reopened have experienced outbreaks - with one school district in Georgia forced to quarantine nearly 925 students and faculty. Countless restaurants that reopened have had to close their doors due to outbreaks. And in the backdrop, states are setting records for single-day death tolls, including Florida and Georgia.
A new Monmouth poll shows little movement in the race for president:
The pollster Monmouth is out with a new survey that shows Biden with a steady lead over Trump:
- Biden: 51%
- Trump: 41%
The poll shows that many Americans are not confident that the election will be conducted fairly and accurately -- only 21% are very confident and 42% are somewhat confident. Concerns range from foreign election meddling to potential issues with vote by mail.
