Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The FDA gave emergency approval for plasma treatment:
In a brief press conference yesterday, President Trump announced that the Food and Drug Administration approved for emergency use the delivery of antibody plasma to patients infected with COVID-19. The treatment has already been administered to over 70,000 patients in the United States. There have been no randomized controlled trials to date on the treatment but the FDA cited promising data on its effectiveness. Some top health officials, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, warned that the data were sparse and to continue conducting clinical trials before granting approval for widespread use of the treatment.
House Democrats joined by several Republicans passed a bill to fund the USPS:
After what appears to be a systematic takedown of the United States Postal Service by the administration, leaving it strapped for cash amidst the pandemic, the House of Representatives passed a $25 billion emergency funding bill for the USPS by a 257-150 vote. 26 Republicans voted in favor of the bill.
The bill would also reverse changes implemented in the last few months by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, after he promised to halt changes but said nothing about rolling back his cuts and removal of collection boxes and sorting machines.
After the Democratic National Convention, a new poll finds Biden leading Trump:
Last week the Democrats held their National Convention, an all-virtual event in which former Vice President Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris were formally nominated to lead the party’s ticket. The Republican National Convention will be held this week, and President Trump is expected to speak all four nights.
The first national poll since the convention from CBS News/YouGov finds that Biden leads Trump by 10 points:
- Biden: 52%
- Trump: 42%
We will continue to track national polling as we get closer to election day.
