Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
During the third night of protests in Kenosha, WI, two people were killed:
Protesters have taken to the streets in Kenosha, Wisconsin and around the country to speak out against the shooting of Jacob Blake by police. It was another shocking shooting of a Black person in America that has inspired change since early this summer -- from hundreds of thousands of protesters to changes in state and local laws to the passage of the Justice in Policing Act by the House.
But demonstrations last night turned deadly when two people were killed and one was injured last night in Kenosha. The Future Majority team is tracking the story.
COVID-19 cases are declining but new hot spots are emerging:
New cases of COVID-19 have started to gradually drop in states hit hard in June and July, including Arizona, Florida and Texas. But cases are starting to grow in some parts of the midwest as quarantine fatigue sets in. New cases per 100,000 are now on the rise by 5% in the Midwest.
Meanwhile at the federal level, in a surprise move, the CDC issued new testing guidelines for COVID-19. They have now said that people without symptoms may not need to be tested for the virus even if they had been in close contact with someone known to be infected. Public health experts have warned that these are the exact type of people to be tested as they could unknowingly spread the virus without symptoms.
New polling shows that Trump’s approval is still under water as he leads the programming for the Republican National Convention:
A new poll from Politico/Morning Consult shows that President Trump’s approval is 14 points under water:
- Approve: 42%
- Disapprove: 56%
While a new CNBC/Change Research poll in the battleground states found that his approval fares slightly better among these voters:
- Approve: 45%
- Disapprove: 55%
