Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
COVID-19 cases in the United States have surpassed 6 million:
Sunday marked another grim milestone -- over 6 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19, the most of any country in the world.
In addition to the millions of cases, 183,000 Americans have lost their lives to the disease. Many experts and analyses demonstrate that the death toll is likely higher due to underreporting and undercounting.
Meanwhile, President Trump is tweeting fringe conspiracy theories that lie about COVID-19 data -- data reported by Trump’s own administration -- in an effort to still downplay the virus that has impacted countless communities and caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs and livelihoods.
The Director of National Intelligence said it would no longer brief Congress on foregin election interference:
There are 65 days until the 2020 elections, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence let the House and Senate intelligence committees know that it would stop briefing them in person on election security issues, including foreign interference.
House leaders have spoken out, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Chair of the House Intelligence Committee Rep. Adam Schiff: "This is a shocking abdication of its lawful responsibility to keep the Congress currently informed, and a betrayal of the public's right to know how foreign powers are trying to subvert our democracy.”
The surprising change in protocol comes as the intelligence community has warned that multiple countries are actively attempting to interfere in our elections, including Russia, Iran and China.
Trump’s approval continues to be down double digits:
An incumbent’s approval rating is typically a strong predictor of their reelection chances. A new Hill/HarrisX poll finds that President Trump’s approval is net 12 points negative:
- Approve: 44%
- Disapprove: 56%
