Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Steroids appear to be promising for treating very ill COVID-19 patients:
Clinical trials from around the world are showing that cheap, readily available steroids can help mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in critically ill patients. The research suggests that these corticosteroids should be the first line of treatment for very ill patients. Analysis showed that use of steroids were correlated with a one-third drop in deaths.
Dr. Fauci gave a forceful defense of the government’s COVID-19 data:
After President Trump retweeted conspiracy theories that lied about the death toll due to COVID-19 in the United States, Dr. Anthony Fauci gave a strong rebuke. “...The numbers you’ve been hearing, the 180,000 plus deaths, are real deaths from COVID-19. Let there not be any confusion about that,” the nation’s top infectious disease expert said yesterday. “It’s not 9,000 deaths from COVID-19. It’s 180,000 plus deaths.”
Trump’s job approval is all over the map:
Three new national polls have President Trump’s job approval in different spots.
A new Politico/Morning Consult poll shows his approval 15 points under water:
- Approve: 42%
- Disapprove: 57%
But a USA Today/Suffolk poll shows that Americans are more approving of his job performance:
- Approve: 45%
- Disapprove: 52%
A new poll from Grinnell College/Seltzer shows a similar story, but with 8% of voters not sure of their approval of the president:
- Approve: 42%
- Disapprove: 50%
However, when it comes to preference for president, voters are largely in the same spot as before the conventions. Former Vice President Joe Biden leads Trump by 7 points in the USA Today/Suffolk poll, 50% to 43%.
