A top medical advisor in the White House has taken to embracing "herd immunity" as a strategy to combat the spread of COVID-19. Putting millions of lives at risk for the sake of the economy is the furthest thing from a solution.
Other countries, like Sweden, have embraced this tactic with little success. Sweden has some of the highest infection and death rates and their economy is still struggling. The WHO estimates that 65-70% of the population would need to become infected to achieve heard immunity. That may result in 2.13 million deaths in the US, as the virus has a 1% fatality rate.
Herd immunity does not work.
The United States has already lost almost 185,000 lives. Implementing herd immunity practices could lead to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of more deaths.
