Your Daily Roundup for September 8th
Let us know what you think!
Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Congress is back in session. There is a lot at stake:
After the summer recess, Senators are back in Washington and on the table are massive negotiations: the potential for a government shutdown at the end of the month, and much-needed economic relief for millions of Americans due to COVID-19.
Senate Republicans are putting forward narrow relief programs, including $300 per week in additional unemployment benefits -- down from $600 in the CARES Act. The House passed the HEROES Act, which would have restored those benefits, back in May.
Russia is again actively undermining the 2020 elections:
The Department of Homeland Security warned that Russia is working “to undermine public trust in the electoral process” through the proliferation of false claims about fraud related to mail-in ballots. Those same statements have been repeated by President Trump and Attorney General Bill Barr, as well as other Republican lawmakers and conservative media figures. Election experts are expecting a boom in mail-in ballots as states around the country changed their procedures to expand vote by mail in light of COVID-19.
New polling shows Biden leading Trump:
The presidential race is relatively stable -- as far as national polling is concerned. A new CBS News/YouGov poll out over the weekend shows former Vice President Joe Biden up 10 points against President Donald Trump:
- Biden: 52%
- Trump: 42%
And in the key battleground state of Wisconsin, CBS News/YouGov finds that Biden leads Trump, but more narrowly than the national margin:
- Biden: 50%
- Trump: 44%
