Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died:
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a trailblazer for gender equality and civil rights passed away on Friday at 87 years old. Millions around the country mourned her loss, with thousands paying their respects outside of the Supreme Court over the weekend. She became a revered figure on the nation’s highest court, a member of the liberal wing, she was known for her blistering dissents when in the minority opinion. One of her most famous majority opinions included United States v. Virginia, in which women were granted the right to attend the all-male Virginia Military Institute.
President Trump said he would nominate a candidate to replace her as soon as this Friday or Saturday, which would then put the individual in front of the Senate for confirmation. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already indicated that he will move expeditiously with President Trump’s nominee, despite not holding a hearing for former President Obama’s nominee in 2016 during an election year.
The impact of COVID-19 is nearing two unimaginable milestones:
After only nine months, COVID-19 has completely altered the world. And what seemed unthinkable is our new reality: the world is on the brink of reaching 1 million deaths due to the virus, with 200,000 of those souls lost in the United States. Across the globe, 73 countries are experiencing rises in new daily cases. With fall and the seasonal flu season approaching, there are more unknowns than ever.
New national polling shows a relatively stable race for president:
A series of national polls released over the weekend show that the contest for president continues to be stable, with former Vice President Joe Biden leading President Trump by about 6-8 points. Here is a look from two major polls the Future Majority team is tracking:
NPR/PBS/Marist:
- Biden: 52%
- Trump: 43%
NBC News/Wall Street Journal:
- Biden: 51%
- Trump: 43%
