Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Protests have erupted in Louisville after no one was held accountable for the death of Breonna Taylor:
Protesters took to the streets in Louisville, Kentucky and cities around the country after a grand jury declined to bring charges directly for the death of Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old Black woman killed by police in March. Only one former officer was charged with reckless endangerment for firing in another apartment in Taylor’s building.
While most of the protests were peaceful demonstrations, officials in Louisville said two officers were shot last night.
The family and Black Lives Matter protesters were hoping for more serious charges, and many felt it was another case of the justice system working against Black Americans. There has been a renewed rallying cry for the Justice in Policing Act to reform police conduct and build safer communities for all Americans.
New FDA guidelines for vaccine approval are now in question:
The FDA, in an effort to lead with science, planned to release stricter guidelines than usual for emergency authorization of any new COVID-19 vaccine in the United States. But yesterday, President Trump said that the White House “may or may not” approve those new guidelines and said that the agency’s efforts -- part of the federal government -- “sound[ed] like a political move.”
