Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The U.S. has reached a staggering 7 million cases of COVID-19:
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. has amassed a staggering 7 million confirmed cases according to a database by the New York Times, with the real total likely to be much higher due to underreporting and a slowdown in testing. More than 202,000 Americans have died from the virus. On both grim measures, the U.S. leads the world.
As the virus continues to spread, the economic recovery that looked promising as states reopened has begun to slow down. 870,000 Americans filed for new state unemployment benefits last week, an uptick from the week prior.
A federal judge has weighed in on the Census case:
A federal judge for the Northern District of California ruled that the administration could not end the 2020 census a month early as it had planned. The administration announced that it would end the count by September 30th, a month prior to the previous scheduled date of October 31st, despite delays in counting due to the pandemic. Evidence showed that officials at the Census Bureau believed that ending the count early would jeopardize its accuracy.
Fox News has released new polling in key 2020 states:
Fox News surveyed likely voters in Nevada, Ohio and Pennsylvania, and the results show former Vice President Joe Biden leading President Trump in all three states:
- Biden: 52%
- Trump: 41%
- Biden: 50%
- Trump: 45%
- Biden: 51%
- Trump: 44%
However, Quinnipiac also polled voters in Ohio and found a much closer race:
- Biden: 48%
- Trump: 47%
