Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
The President and First Lady have tested positive for COVID-19
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump announced that they tested positive for COVID-19 early this morning, the virus that has taken hold of the globe and killed nearly 210,000 in the United States alone. The President and First Lady will be isolated in the White House for an unknown period of time.
There is still much we do not know about this critical news. The announcement came after reports that close White House aide who traveled with the President numerous times this week, Hope Hicks, tested positive Wednesday evening -- though the public did not learn of this until Thursday evening. Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence both tested negative for the virus, as did Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The Future Majority team will continue to track official statements and updates from the news media.
The September jobs report indicates a slowing recovery:
661,000 jobs were added in September as the unemployment rate dropped to 7.9%. This is a significant dropoff from the 1.5 million jobs added in August and the big boon of 4.8 million added in June, a sign that the recovery is slowing down. This is the final federal jobs report before the election in just over a month.

The House passed a $2.2 trillion economic relief package:
Before the news of the spread of COVID-19 in the White House, the House passed a new $2.2 trillion economic stimulus package as part of the ongoing negotiations to provide economic relief to millions of Americans. This comes after the HEROES Act, a larger bill that the House passed in May, was never heard on the floor of the Senate.
