Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
President Trump is back at the White House:
After several days at Walter Reed Medical Center, President Trump, still infectious with COVID-19 returned to the White House Monday evening. Despite the pandemic still rising and his own personal infection, Trump likened the virus to the seasonal flu and told Americans to not be afraid. Over 210,000 Americans have died, nearly 7.5 million have been infected, including several top aides to the president, White House workers, members of the press and Republican Senators in the past few days.
The U.S. trade deficit has reached a 14-year high:
The U.S. trade deficit jumped 5.9% in August to $67.1 billion -- a high for the nation since 2006. With exports at $171.9 billion and imports at $239 billion, the U.S. trade deficit of goods and services is of great concern.
As millions of Americans continue to struggle in a wounded economy, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin will continue talks today over a potential economic relief package after months of no progress, despite the HEROES Act being on the table since May. The window is closing rapidly as lawmakers will head home in the final weeks before the election.
Biden has widened his lead in a new CNN poll:
Former Vice President Joe Biden has increased his lead over President Trump in a new national CNN poll conducted after last week’s debate and Trump’s contraction of COVID-19:
- Biden: 57%
- Trump: 41%
The 16-point lead is the highest in the poll to date. Likely voters select Biden as best to handle a number of key issues, including COVID-19, healthcare, racial inequality, crime and safety, and nominations to the Supreme Court. The two candidates are virtually tied on their handling of the economy.
