Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
President Trump said he would no longer seek economic relief for COVID-19:
With tens of millions of Americans unemployed, untold numbers facing evictions, and small and large businesses alike on the brink of closing, President Trump announced on Twitter yesterday that he was directing his representatives to back away from negotiations on additional aid for the ailing U.S. economy.
Just yesterday, the Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, told Congress that a second stimulus package was needed to stave off major blows to the economic recovery: “Too little support would lead to a weak recovery, creating unnecessary hardship for households and businesses” … “Over time, household insolvencies and business bankruptcies would rise, harming the productive capacity of the economy and holding back wage growth.”
Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris will debate tonight:
The first and only Vice Presidential Debate is happening tonight at 9 p.m. Eastern between Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden’s running mate on the Democratic ticket. The debate will be carried live on the major networks, as well as Cable news channels and streamed on a variety of platforms. Susan Page of USA Today will moderate the debate in Salt Lake City.
The two face off as President Trump is currently infectious with COVID-19, and Pence, who has been in close proximity to the President before his diagnosis, said he has tested negative. The two sides have been going back and forth about increasing the distance between the candidates’ podiums and using plexiglass shields to mitigate the potential spread of COVID-19.
