Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
COVID-19 is surging:
On Thursday, more than 62,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the U.S., the highest daily total since July. The country is barreling toward surpassing 8 million confirmed cases of the virus that has killed 217,000 people in the United States.
In the past week, 20 states have reached records in their seven-day average of new cases counts. The Midwest, including Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin are being hit hard. Western states like Colorado and Idaho are seeing steady rises as well. President Trump’s response? “We’re not doing any more lockdowns,” he said. “We’re doing fine.”
Two competing town halls:
Last night, millions of Americans tuned in not to a debate between the two major party presidential candidates, but to dueling town halls after President Trump said he would not adhere to the rule changes by the Commission on Presidential Debates to hold the second debate virtually. It was thereafter canceled.
President Trump was on NBC with Savannah Guthrie while former Vice President Joe Biden was on ABC with George Stephanopoulos. Topics ranged from COVID-19, to foreign policy, to the legitimacy of the election. President Trump incorrectly cited a CDC study and misrepresented its data by implying that mask-wearing was less effective against the spread of the virus than the research and experts have borne out.
Voters are not happy about where the country is headed:
In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, 62% of voters say the country is generally headed in the wrong direction versus 29% of those who say it is on the right track -- a 33-point difference.
NPR/PBS/Marist shows a similar approval/disapproval split as the NBC/WSJ poll:
- Approve: 43%
- Disapprove: 54%
