Between unstable homes and internet connection, COVID is hitting some students harder than others. Millions of low-income college students across the country are facing massive obstacles while trying to navigate online learning. The digital divide is greater than ever.
Stuck between financial turmoil and technological barriers, including poor wifi and lack of computer access, millions of low-income college students are struggling to achieve higher education. Some are dropping out, while others are looking for housing and internet access.
The negative impact of COVID on college students is demonstrated by the steep drop in enrollment of community college students. Enrollment has dropped by 8% this fall, compared to the 2.5% drop in overall undergraduate enrollment.
We need to do more to support our students. The federal government should commit to making significant investments in improving broadband internet access with particular focus on low-income, minority and rural communities that are disproportionately impacted by the lack of broadband Internet.
