COVID-19 is out of control:
More than 130,000 Americans were newly infected with COVID-19 on Monday, the second-highest single day total and the sixth day in a row that the U.S. reported more than 100,000 daily cases. To put it simply, the virus is out of control.
President-elect Joe Biden who announced a 12-person task force on the virus yesterday called on Americans to wear masks, and said as president he will work with governors to issue mask mandates around the country. As the virus surges, the FDA issued emergency authorization to an antibody treatment manufactured by Eli Lilly. The treatment is meant for patients newly infected who are at risk of developing a severe infection.
President Trump still has not conceded:
Though a concession is merely a formality, never before has a president refused to concede when there was an apparent winner as is the case with President Trump refusing to acknowledge President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. Only a handful of Republican elected officials in Congress have done their part by acknowledging reality and moving forward. For the safety and security of the nation, as well as controlling the virus, what is most critical between presidencies is a smooth and transparent transition. But a Trump-appointee, Emily Murphy, who serves as the administrator of the General Services Administration has refused to provide a letter of ascertainment, which would allow the Biden transition team to access federal funds as required by law to aid in the transition process.
How do voters see the election and transition?
A new post-election survey from Navigator shows that 79% of voters say that Joe Biden will be sworn in as president in January. After the major new outlets called the election for Biden, 51% of voters in the survey said President Trump should concede, while 32% said he should not and 17% were unsure.
