Good morning. As the COVID-19 pandemic takes a toll on life in America, our team at Future Majority is tracking the latest updates:
Another record-breaking day of new COVID-19 cases:
The United States again broke a record for new daily cases, as over 140,000 people were infected with the virus Wednesday alone. This number only accounts for confirmed cases - the real count is likely much higher. It took only a week to go from 100,000 daily cases to 140,000.
The virus is out of control, and already the state of Texas has surpassed one million confirmed cases - more than most countries. Hospitalizations are also at a record high. 65,368 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 on Wednesday, a doubling since last month.
Unemployment claims are still above 700,000:
723,000 Americans filed for state unemployment benefits last week alone, while another nearly 300,000 filed for the federal unemployment program. While the levels are at a low since the start of the pandemic, they are still well above pre-pandemic levels and are higher and more sustained than in previous economic recessions.
The AP has made several more presidential race calls in the states that were outstanding:
Though President-elect Joe Biden had already surpassed the 270 Electoral Votes needed to win the presidency, the Associated Press made a few more race calls that show how the rest of the map is shaping up in states that were continuing to count and verify mail-in ballots. Biden now leads Trump by 290 to 232 after Biden took Arizona and Trump took Alaska and North Carolina. Only Georgia remains uncalled, and Biden currently leads by 0.3% and over 14,000 votes, which will almost surely remain the spread during the anticipated recount. That would give Biden 306 Electoral Votes. Biden currently leads Trump by over 5 million votes in the total votes counted.
