It’s hard to describe how events have turned in the past several weeks in the United States. What once seemed like a far-off threat, the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a major toll in the U.S., and life as we know it has been altered.

The U.S. is now the global leader in COVID-19 cases. The economy has taken a nosedive, much of the country is under shelter-in-place orders, schools are closed indefinitely and millions of Americans have lost their jobs. Tragically, thousands of Americans have lost their lives.

But things perhaps could look different if not for key missteps and weeks of downplaying the risk of the pandemic by the Trump administration. In the memo below, our team is keeping an updated timeline of events that led to this outbreak that continues to plague our country.

Currently, the US has over 1 million confirmed cases of COVID-19.

How can we stop the spread of the virus? Wide-spread, rapid testing. This tactic will allows us to track the virus more easily and flatten the curve. It will also help protect countless Americans from contracting the virus.

Congress should make sure health agencies are building up the capacity of our healthcare system to address COVID-19 by ensuring that every single American can be tested for the disease, and tested quickly.

If another public health crisis were to occur, this would allow more Americans to access primary care doctors through a call or a visit. This would also reduce strain on emergency departments around the country. More importantly, Americans wouldn't have to choose between paying for the health care they need and putting dinner on the table.

Our nation’s veterans serve and protect us in the military -- but too often, we fail to serve and protect them when they return home: Only 30% return to civilian life with a job, nearly two million along with four million of their family members lack basic health coverage, 20 veterans die from suicide every day, and over 40,000 are without a home on any given night. They deserve better.

And a set of simple changes and cost-effective tools will make a dramatic difference, from leveraging veterans’ unique experience and training to propel them toward jobs, to proven programs that help with re-entry to civilian life, to services that make it easier for vets to access high quality healthcare and secure housing.

Things just got worse for embattled Republican Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin, which means things must be getting better for Kentucky taxpayers.

We learned today that a three-judge panel of the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled that Bevin must release the names of shareholders/investors in the shady Braidy Industries aluminum mill.

As we told you previously, Gov. Bevin invested $15 million of Kentucky taxpayer money in the Braidy Industries mill, which is owned by Bevin pal Craig Bouchard.

If that weren’t shady enough, Russian aluminum company Rusal, largely owned by Russian oligarch and Putin crony Oleg Deripaska (who’s under sanctions by the U.S. government), is putting $200 million into the Braidy Industries mill and taking a 40% ownership stake in the mill.

You may recall that Oleg Deripaska is the same Russian oligarch who paid $10 million a year to former Trump campaign chairman and convicted felon Paul Manafort.

In December last year in response to an aggressive lobbying campaign, the corrupt Trump administration set the wheels in motion for Rusal’s move into Kentucky when it lifted sanctions against the business empire of Deripaska, one of Russia’s most powerful oligarchs. Deripaska and Rusal were under sanctions in retaliation for hostile Russian interference in the 2016 election.

And guess who greased these wheels for Deripaska and Rusal? Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell (R) and Rand Paul (R).

That’s right. The two Kentucky Republicans voted earlier this year to lift U.S. sanctions on Rusal.

By the way, the vote to lift these sanctions was scheduled by McConnell, the same Senate Majority leader who refuses to schedule a vote on a sweeping anti-corruption package, H.R. 1 that passed the House overwhelmingly earlier this year. Guess he doesn’t want an anti-corruption law that might block his own corruption.

The great Russian invasion of America keeps coming. And our own leaders have rolled out the red carpet for continued Russian interference in U.S. elections and nabbing taxpayer dollars for shady deals in the states like Kentucky. McConnell, Paul and Bevin’s embrace of corrupt Trumpism is a virus - and it is spreading. You've been warned.

We learned today that a three-judge panel of the Kentucky Court of Appeals ruled that Bevin must release the names of shareholders/investors in the shady Braidy Industries aluminum mill.

As we told you previously, Gov. Bevin invested $15 million of Kentucky taxpayer money in the Braidy Industries mill, which is owned by Bevin pal Craig Bouchard.

You may recall that Oleg Deripaska is the same Russian oligarch who paid $10 million a year to former Trump campaign chairman and convicted felon Paul Manafort.

And guess who greased these wheels for Deripaska and Rusal? Kentucky Senators Mitch McConnell (R) and Rand Paul (R).

That’s right. The two Kentucky Republicans voted earlier this year to lift U.S. sanctions on Rusal.

Smart Capitalism - For the People

Some of the 2020 Democratic presidential contenders are also talking about how capitalism is broken and needs to be fixed. Joe Biden says we need to “remake capitalism”. Beto O’Rourke calls for Conscientious Capitalism, Pete Buttigieg dubs it Democratic Capitalism and Elizabeth Warren refers to it as Accountable Capitalism.

We agree with them. And these are all the same concept, which is pretty simple -- Smart Capitalism invests in 100% of American citizens where Inefficient Capitalism empowers mainly the top 10% of earners leaving 90% of Americans in the lurch and not sharing in the wealth creation.

This gulf has created and it perpetuates income inequality, a shrinking middle class, a corporate environment where CEOs work to enrich themselves and their shareholders at the expense of their workers, and a tax system that favors the ultra wealthy.

The current inefficient capitalist system creates concentrated wealth and concentrated power. It rewards greed and can encourage outright theft (see also the financial crash of 2008 and the role of mortgage brokers...). And it lavishes the rich with tax cuts and allows corporations to - in some cases - pay zero taxes, while keeping in place regressive payroll taxes that burden average Americans. This is not a sustainable system. It is undemocratic, and it is inefficient.

Yet this system of inefficient capitalism is flourishing under Donald Trump and it is dangerously coupled with rampant corruption and an erosion of democracy that could lead the United States in the direction of a kleptocracy. (Wait, is this what Putin had planned all along???)

If Donald Trump has proved anything, it is that we need to move to a system of Smart Capitalism...and fast. He's also proved we need to take serious action to end the outright corruption that now defines Trump's Washington.

End the Corruption in Washington - For the People

When Democrats took control of the House earlier this year, one of the first things they did was to try to end the rampant culture of corruption that has a grip on Washington and keeps the system of inefficient capitalism chugging along.

On March 8, 2019 Democrats unanimously passed H.R. 1, the For the People Act - the most sweeping package of anti-corruption legislation since Watergate.

H.R. 1 would require Super PACs and other so called “dark money” groups to disclose their donors and it would enact new ethics laws and lobbying restrictions. It is aimed at stopping the flow of the unlimited and unrestricted money that dictates both who gets elected and how policy is shaped in Washington. It is this type of unregulated money in politics that rigs the system in favor of the wealthy and is corrosive to our democracy.

What does this have to do with capitalism? Simple - it is corporate lobbyists and corporate dark money spending in elections that buys access to politicians and keeps an inefficient capitalist system in place.

These folks want to keep the current system in place because they can bend the rules to work for themselves. And without anti-corruption measures like H.R. 1, these folks will continue to concentrate wealth and power where they see fit. It is this rigging of the system that blocks the very competition that makes capitalism work and benefit all Americans - not just the top 10%.

Yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) flatly refuses to bring H.R. 1 to a vote in the Senate. It’s no wonder...Mitch McConnell relies on corporate and lobbyist cash.

According to Open Secrets, from 1998-2018 McConnell took an absolutely obscene amount of campaign cash from the financial services industry ($12,994,583), lawyers and lobbyists ($4,543,968) and other business interests ($6,249,322).

If we as a country really want to be For the People, the Senate must bring H.R. 1 to a vote and we must move towards a system of Smart Capitalism that works For the People. All of them.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is no stranger to wielding his power to help him and his allies win elections.

He did it in 2018, when he leveraged his position as Secretary of State to oversee the gubernatorial election he ran in, and turned the other way as counties in Georgia unlawfully rejected absentee ballots of minority voters. In addition, he purged the voter rolls and put voter registration for 53,000 Georgians on hold — 70% of which were for black voters.

And he’s back at it again this year, cancelling an upcoming election for the state Supreme Court, after a Republican Justice is set to retire at the end of the year. Instead of a duly-held election that puts the decision in the hands of voters in the state, Kemp will hand-select Justice Keith Blackwell’s successor, ensuring that the seat remains in Republican control for at least two years.

Anyone might think that this has something to do with the COVID-19 pandemic and voter safety. But Kemp and the Georgia GOP have been planning this since February, using a technicality in the state’s constitution to do away with the election. Rather than play fair, Kemp cheats to win.

When it comes to elections as important as the state’s highest court — or any election for that matter — voters deserve to be heard. It’s time that politicians stop interfering and put elections back where they are intended: with the people.

American Independent Reports: McConnell gets $50,000 from pharma after blocking bill to lower drug prices

In September 2018, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a groundbreaking bill, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act. The bill would allow the government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies on prescription drug costs for Medicare, restrict price hikes, and limit out-of-pocket costs. The same day, Mitch McConnell said the bill would not pass the Senate.

On Oct. 16, McConnell received a $2,500 check from Takeda Pharmaceuticals' political action committee, according to McConnell's reports to the Federal Election Commission.

The same campaign finance filings show that a few weeks after that, multinational pharmaceutical company Novartis' PAC also sent $2,500 to McConnell. Then, a PAC for another pharma company, Emergent BioSolutions, kicked in $2,500.

By the end of December, McConnell's campaign reported, he had received at least $30,000 more from the corporate political action committees of Bluebird Bio ($2,500), Boehringer Ingelheim ($5,000), Greenwich Biosciences ($2,500), Teva USA ($10,000), and UCB ($2,500).

According to filings from his Bluegrass Committee leadership PAC, Merck & Co. also contributed $5,000 to support McConnell and Sanofi donated $2,500.

That's not it. McConnell also received another $12,600 from pharmaceutical CEOs and lobbyists.

It is clear that Mitch McConnell is funding his campaign on the backs of the American people. We need to tell Mitch to do his job.

Russian aluminum company Rusal, partly owned by Russian oligarch and Putin crony Oleg Deripaska (who’s currently under sanctions by the U.S. government), is putting $200 million into a Kentucky aluminum mill plant to be built by Braidy Industries, a company that’s owned by Craig Bouchard, a buddy of Gov. Matt Bevin (R-KY). Rusal will own 40 percent of the aluminum plant.

Rusal is the same Russian company Mitch McConnell voted earlier this year to lift U.S. sanctions on. And Deripaska is the same Russian oligarch still under U.S. sanctions and the same Russian oligarch who had significant business ties to former Trump campaign chairman and convicted felon Paul Manafort.

The great Republican sellout to Russia is still ongoing folks. Their corrupt embrace of Trumpism is a virus, and it is now spreading to the states with the help of Republican Mitch McConnell.

Kentucky taxpayers have already subsidized Braidy Industries aluminum plant thanks to $15 million they received from Governor Bevin in a desperate attempt to look like a job creator in an election year. Now, Mitch McConnell has greased the wheels by lifting sanctions on the Russian company that today announced a $200 million infusion into Braidy.

Coincidence?

No.

Corruption.

When asked about the cloud hanging over the investment, Braidy CEO Craig Bouchard offered some Trumpian nonsense to defend his deal with the devil:

“If you remember Hannah Montanna, everybody loved her at the time. Then she became a teenager -- Miley Cyrus -- and the media got on her a little bit, and now she is a beautiful married woman. I expect that Rusal comes out of this as the superstar company in our industry.”

What?!

When Trump announced earlier this year he was lifting sanctions on Deripaska, there was a bipartisan effort in the Senate to stop it. Republicans and Democrats joined together to say an attack on this nation must be punished.

Mitch McConnell did not join that effort. Now we know why.

McConnell is forcing the American people into a deal with the same country that attacked our democracy less than three years ago, and he apparently doesn’t care if he puts the people of his own state in bed with the oligarchs who think they can interfere in our elections and get away with it.

What does Matt Bevin have to say about Rusal?

“This is a seed that has been in the ground. The germination so often seems invisible to people, but good things have been happening,” Bevin said. “We are going to see in the days immediately ahead as the first little shoots start to come up out of the soil, and it’s exciting to see this and it’s a blessing for me to be a small little part of this.”

Yes, Gov. Bevin, this is a seed, but it has been planted by the very people who want to destroy our democracy. That you and Mitch would help them, speaks volumes about the state of the Republican Party today.

Whether it’s winning elections or bailing them out of bad deals, it seems there’s nothing Republicans won’t ask the Russians to help them do.

Trump’s corruption is a virus, and we can see that it is clearly spreading from Washington to the states. Today it’s Kentucky. Who knows which state it will be tomorrow?

Russian aluminum company Rusal, partly owned by Russian oligarch and Putin crony Oleg Deripaska (who’s currently under sanctions by the U.S. government), is putting $200 million into a Kentucky aluminum mill plant to be built by Braidy Industries, a company that’s owned by Craig Bouchard, a buddy of Gov. Matt Bevin (R-KY). Rusal will own 40 percent of the aluminum plant.

The great Republican sellout to Russia is still ongoing folks. Their corrupt embrace of Trumpism is a virus, and it is now spreading to the states with the help of Republican Mitch McConnell.

When asked about the cloud hanging over the investment, Braidy CEO Craig Bouchard offered some Trumpian nonsense to defend his deal with the devil:

“If you remember Hannah Montanna, everybody loved her at the time. Then she became a teenager -- Miley Cyrus -- and the media got on her a little bit, and now she is a beautiful married woman. I expect that Rusal comes out of this as the superstar company in our industry.”

What?!

Mitch McConnell did not join that effort. Now we know why.

What does Matt Bevin have to say about Rusal?

“This is a seed that has been in the ground. The germination so often seems invisible to people, but good things have been happening,” Bevin said. “We are going to see in the days immediately ahead as the first little shoots start to come up out of the soil, and it’s exciting to see this and it’s a blessing for me to be a small little part of this.”

Whether it’s winning elections or bailing them out of bad deals, it seems there’s nothing Republicans won’t ask the Russians to help them do.

Trump’s corruption is a virus, and we can see that it is clearly spreading from Washington to the states. Today it’s Kentucky. Who knows which state it will be tomorrow?

The response from the GOP? Crickets. This is what real oversight looks like. It’s what the Constitution requires. And it’s what Republicans failed to do for the first two years of the Trump administration.

Accountability: Shared stories from millions of Americans struggling as a result of the Trump Shutdown

Democrats held the line on Donald Trump’s disastrous government shutdown and helped shine a spotlight on the plight of government workers and millions of others who were struggling to pay their bills, make their mortgage payments and feed their families as Trump forced them to go without paychecks for more than a month. We continue to learn of the disastrous impact on our country from Trump’s irresponsible and dangerous government shutdown, including an FAA unable to warn pilots in a timely manner of a software flaw in the auto-pilot system of the Boeing 737 Max 8. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many Americans have been left without income as businesses are closing down and jobs are being lost. Yet, utility companies are allowed to turn off utilities if bills aren't paid. The Government needs to protect citizens by preventing disconnection for those who can't afford bills.

If this were to happen, many Americans would be able to shift their focus and alleviate stress to providing for their families and figuring out how to navigate through tough times. Being able to have power, running water, heat and air conditioning are not privileges -- they are necessities. So it is critical that the Government protects the most basic needs to ensure Americans are not left without what is needed to survive.

President Trump escalated peaceful protests for a photo op and threats of more violence:

On the seventh straight day of protests in America, Trump appeared to only incite more violence by threatening the use of U.S. military force against American citizens. Military police sprayed tear gas and rubber bullets into a crowd of peaceful protestors gathered outside of the White House so President Trump could walk across the street for a photo op in front of a church. He was not joined by a single person of color.

Violence between police and protestors, as well as chaos caused by mostly young and some organized looters intensified on Monday. In cities around the county, violence and looting drowned out the mostly peaceful rallies against police brutality and racism. At least five individuals have died in the wake of the protests and several police officers were injured by gun violence and vehicle attacks. Countless protestors have been injured.

New York officials are worried about a second wave of COVID-19 in light of the protests:

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo warned that the protests could ignite a second wave of the virus and potentially jeopardize the June 8th phased reopening of New York City. He urged protestors to “protest, just be smart about it.”

Elsewhere around the country, states continued to lift stay-at-home orders. Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) lifted the stay-at-home order for the state and would allow groups of 100 people or less to gather, and restaurants to reopen with social distancing measures.

In Minnesota, hospitalizations due to the virus ticked up and cases remained high.

Most Americans believe that police treat whites better than blacks:

A new poll from CBS/YouGov asked Americans how they believe race plays into police treatment, and a majority agree that whites are treated better than blacks:

White Americans better than Black Americans: 57%
Equally: 39%
Black Americans better than White Americans: 4%

Almost half of Americans disapprove of Trump’s response to the killing of George Floyd and the subsequent protests in Minneapolis:
